Niflheim was brought to be from chaos
The sons of Bor slew Ymir
And from him the Earth was made

No sacrifice to great in his unending search for wisdom
Such is the nature of the father of Thor
Long ago he ventured to Mimir’s well
To seek the cosmic knowledge in its sweet water
There dwelt the shadow being who guarded the Well of Urd
And he demanded a sacrifice to taste of its waters
The Allfather gouged out his left eye
And Mimir offered him a drink in accordance

He inflicted himself a mortal wound
With the spear known as Gungnir
He hung from the world tree for nine days and nights
Suspended from the branch in a form of living death giving him knowledge of the runes
